Sunderland community contacts: local help and ways to get involved

Find council, library, family support and community starting points around Sunderland.

Contact the right council service

Sunderland City Council’s general enquiries number is 0191 520 5555. Its contact page directs residents towards the relevant service, including reporting local issues and managing council enquiries. Explain the address and subject so the request reaches the right team.

Washington, Houghton-le-Spring and Hetton-le-Hole are within the wider Sunderland council area. Whitburn and Seaham have different local authorities. A business’s service coverage does not determine which council handles a property or local issue.

Use the library and independent advice routes

Culture House at Keel Square is home to the City Library and a programme of learning and community activities. For a visit or session, the current venue page gives access information and booking links. Other library branches have their own arrangements.

For help with a money, benefits, housing or consumer problem, use Citizens Advice Sunderland’s current contact information. Explain what advice you need before travelling, as a contact address does not guarantee a drop-in appointment. The national Citizens Advice finder is another way to locate the relevant service.

Find support for families and wellbeing

Sunderland Parent Carer Forum brings together parent carers of children and young people up to age 25 with special educational needs and disabilities. It organises information sessions, coffee mornings and opportunities to influence services. Its local contact is 07393 129858 or spcfoffice@sunderlandpcf.co.uk.

Grace House on Bardolph Drive supports disabled children, young people and their families through activities and family support. Sunderland Mind has a wellbeing hub on Church Street East and provides local mental health activities and support. Contact the organisation about current services and access arrangements.

Contribute through practical local projects

Community Sustainability Services in Southwick works with affordable furniture, donated items and practical household support. Fightback Charity provides information, social activities and foodbank support. Each has its own process for requesting help or donating, so make contact before bringing items or attending.

Volunteering, joining an activity and hiring a community space are different ways to get involved. Hylton Castle and local organisations advertise their own opportunities. Our directory and What’s On guide provide starting points for finding the group or event that fits your interests.
