Shopping in Sunderland: independent shops, homewares and local stops

Explore Sunderland city-centre shops, specialist retailers and neighbourhood shopping around Fulwell and Southwick.

Combine the centre with its independent streets

The Bridges is a useful city-centre starting point for shopping, with the surrounding streets adding independent retailers and services. Holmeside, John Street, Fawcett Street and Waterloo Place offer different stops, so choose a route around the items you actually need.

Geekys on Waterloo Place buys, sells and repairs technology. Darke Cycles on John Street sells bikes and accessories and offers servicing. A repair, product valuation and ordinary purchase involve different arrangements; bring the relevant device details or bicycle information when making an enquiry.

Compare home purchases in the right showroom

Harry Thursby on the first floor at 8-10 Holmeside sells flooring, curtains and blinds. Furniture Warehouse North East has a Sunderland showroom on Riverside Road in Southwick, while New Image Carpets is on Wear Street. These are separate destinations rather than shops within one centre.

Sunderland Furniture Centre on Station Road in Fulwell offers furniture and beds near Seaburn Metro station. For a larger purchase, take room measurements and ask about samples, fitting or delivery. A showroom visit is more useful when the team knows the space and type of product you need.

Look at clothing with a community purpose

Women’s Community Boutique on Coronation Street sells and hires sustainable wedding, prom and special occasion wear. It is a social enterprise whose income supports work with local women, including wellbeing and skills activities. Ask about the outfit, size and appointment or hire arrangements before a dedicated visit.

Small shops and studios may offer a more specialist range than a general shopping centre. Use the actual business website for current stock and service details, especially for a particular fitting, repair or custom order. An online catalogue does not establish that every item is held at the premises.

Leave room for a local café stop

Wendy’s Place on Fawcett Street and Otto Coffee on Stockton Road offer different city-centre café stops. Diego’s Joint in Sunniside combines coffee, a bar and food. At Roker, Fausto Coffee on Marine Walk is a seafront option rather than a stop beside The Bridges.

For seasonal markets and one-off shopping events, use current organiser dates. A past market announcement is not confirmation of a regular trading day. Our What’s On page keeps dated activities separate from the everyday shopping guide.
